Interracial Couple Refused Marriage License

跨種族情侶申請結婚證書遭拒

	Civil rights groups are up in arms over the refusal by an eastern Louisiana justice of the peace to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple.
	東路易斯安那一名治安法官拒絕向一對跨種族情侶核發結婚證書，已引起了民權團體的公憤。

	"He's an elected official and one of his duties is to marry people, he doesn't have the right to say he doesn't believe in it," Patricia Morris, president of the NAACP branch of Tangipahoa Parish, told CNN.
	"If he doesn't do what his position calls for him to do, he should resign from that position."
	「他是民選的官員，其中一項職務就是讓人們成婚。他沒有權利說自己不認同別人的婚姻，」美國有色人種協進會坦吉帕霍阿縣分會主席派翠希亞‧莫里斯向 CNN 表示：「他如果不執行這個職位份內的工作，就應該辭職。」
	The calls for the resignation of Keith Bardwell, a justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish's 8th Ward, stem from his denial of a marriage license to Terence McKay, 32, and Beth Humphrey, 30, of Hammond, Louisiana.
	McKay is black and Humphrey is white.
	會出現要求坦吉帕霍阿縣第八行政區的治安法官奇斯‧巴德威爾辭職的呼聲，源自於他拒絕核發三十二歲的泰倫斯‧麥凱與三十歲的貝絲‧亨福瑞的結婚證書。這兩人來自路易斯安那州罕蒙，麥凱是黑人，亨福瑞是白人。
	Asked why he refused to issue the couple a marriage license, Bardwell told the Hammond Daily Star that it was out of concern for the couple's future children.
	He said that, in his experience, most interracial marriages don't last and claimed that children from such marriages are often shunned by both the parent's ethnic groups.
	被問到為什麼拒絕核發結婚證書給那對情侶，巴德威爾向罕蒙的《每日星報》表示是為了他們未來的孩子著想。他說，在他的經驗裡，大部分的跨種族婚姻都持續不久，而且這種婚姻產生的孩子常被父母雙方的族群排拒。
	"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer, and I won't help put them through it."
	「雙方面的族群都難以接受這種婚姻下的孩子，」巴德威爾說：「我認為這樣的孩子會活得很痛苦，所以我不想成為這種後果的幫凶。」
	"I'm not a racist," Bardwell told the newspaper. "I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house.
	My main concern is for the children.
	I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

	The couple sees the situation differently, saying the case comes down to racial discrimination.
	Humphrey said that she called Bardwell on October 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license, and was asked by his wife if it would be an interracial marriage.
	Humphrey said she was told that Bardwell does not "sign off on interracial marriages."
	這對情侶的看法則不一樣，聲稱這起案件就是種族歧視。亨福瑞說，她在十月六日打電話向巴德威爾詢問取得結婚證書的事宜，結果他太太卻問她是不是跨種族婚姻。亨福瑞表示，對方在電話上告訴她說巴德威爾不會「批准跨種族婚姻」。
	"I don't understand this because he is an elected official and discrimination is against the law," Humphrey told the Daily Star.
	「我實在不懂。他是民選的官員，而且歧視明明是違法的呀，」亨福瑞向《每日星報》表示。
	The case has been referred to state and federal authorities.
