New Scandal Hits Taiwan's Professional Baseball League

Taiwan's baseball fans may be feeling gloomy about the future of their beloved sport on the island.
The already suffering Taiwan Professional Baseball League was once again hit by scandal as prosecutors opened an investigation last week into allegations that players had intentionally thrown games for financial payoffs.
Former players and gambling kingpins were detained in the police sweep.
By Wednesday the investigation had been expanded as police questioned another nine players, with eight named as suspects.
The investigation comes on the heels of the Taiwan Series, the island's professional baseball championship, which saw the Uni-President 7-11 Lions defeat the Brother Elephants.
The Elephants are the focus of the police investigation, according to local media.

This is not the first time that the baseball league has been beset by corruption charges.

In the past, players have been threatened by gangsters bent on influencing the outcome of games.
This time, however, money rather than intimidation was the motivating factor, according to prosecutors.
Professional baseball teams have struggled in recent years to regain the trust of the ticket buying public.
The league has shrunk to just four teams after others folded due to financial problems brought on by prior scandals.
The situation is doubly tragic for local fans because baseball is one of the few international sports at which Taiwan has excelled on the global stage.
"In the past, we used baseball to raise our morale and reinforce our national identity," author and professor Yu Jun-wei told the New York Times.
"It still serves a political purpose. China always says we're part of their territory.
But we can use baseball to prove to ourselves and others that we still exist in international society."
The latest scandal hurts all the more because it involves one of the island's star athletes, pitcher Tsao Chin-hui, the first Taiwanese to have played in the U.S. major leagues.
Tsao, who now plays for the Brother Elephants, maintains his innocence.
"It's devastating, for sure," said Richard Wang, the league's international affairs director.
"If what the media says is true -- that players were voluntarily cooperating with bookies -- that's really bad news."
